Opening of Aboriginal Head Start on Reserve

August 26, 2022

Unceded Lekwungen Territory, Victoria BC – Today, Songhees Nation is proud to open their Aboriginal Head Start On-Reserve Program to support children and families.

"Songhees Nation is proud to offer the Aboriginal Head Start program to our member families free of charge,” said Chief Ron Sam.  “Our children's early learning development is so important to their future success and prosperity, and this important on-reserve program will allow families to kick-start their children’s education in a culturally appropriate and safe environment. We are looking forward to watching this program thrive and grow and become an invaluable resource in fostering our children's emotional, social, and spiritual well-being."

The Aboriginal Head Start On-Reserve Program will offer activities focused on early childhood learning and development for First Nations children from birth to age six and their families. The goal of this program is to support programming that is designed and delivered by First Nations communities to meet their unique needs and priorities. The Head Start programs will include six key components which include, parent and family involvement, education, nutrition, health promotion, and social support with culture and language as their foundation. This program will be flexible in nature, in that each community can select the delivery model that best meets their needs, this will ensure that all six components can be delivered to children from birth to age six.

“Our team did a great job to secure this program for our Nation and our families. We hope all our members take advantage of this exciting opportunity for life-long learning,” Sam added.
